HC Deb 03 July 1933 vol 280 c17
28. Mr. LOGAN

(for Mr. KIRK-WOOD) asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs if he intends to reopen negotiations with the Irish Free State with a view to seeking a settlement of the tariff war which is causing serious loss to workers and trade in both countries?

Mr. J. H. THOMAS

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply which I gave to the hon. Member for Gower (Mr. D. Grenfell) on 21st June.

Mr. LOGAN

Would it not be possible to take similar action to that which resulted in the release of the Russian prisoners?

Mr. THOMAS

It has always been possible. If I drew any conclusion, it would be that the Government decided that the release of those prisoners was essential and they took steps to secure it and succeeded. They also believe the debt ought to be paid, and they have taken steps to secure that.

Mr. THONE

Why does not the right hon. Gentleman take the same steps that he used when negotiating with the railway companies?

Mr. THOMAS

I do precisely.

Mr. SPEAKER

That does not arise out of the Question on the Paper.
