HC Deb 16 February 1933 vol 274 c1171
56. Mr. LOGAN

asked the Minister of Health if he is aware that, owing to unemployment in Liverpool, an extra £480,000 of rates, equal to 1s. 8d. in the pound for the next financial year, is required by the Liverpool Public Assistance Committee; and what steps, if any, is he taking to relieve such areas?

Sir H. YOUNG

I am aware that an increase in the town council's expenditure on public assistance is anticipated. As regards the second part of the question, I would refer to the reply given yesterday to the hon. Member for Birkenhead, East (Mr. White).

Mr. THORNE

Is not the right hon. Gentleman aware that the same thing applies to every industrial centre throughout the country?

Sir H. YOUNG

No, Sir; that is not in general the case.

Mr. LOGAN

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman when he is going to implement the promise, which he made about six months ago, that he would deal with necessitous areas in regard to these special cases?

Sir H. YOUNG

It is quite clear that I cannot deal with that matter in reply to a supplementary question. The matter, no doubt, will arise for discussion before long in the House.
