HC Deb 16 February 1933 vol 274 c1147
1. Mr. HALL-CAINE

asked the Minister of Labour whether his attention has been called to the substantial proportion of applications for alien workers advertised in the National Clearing House Gazette; and whether, before such advertisements are inserted, every attempt is made to ascertain from the employers whether British workers would fill their requirements?

The MINISTER of LABOUR (Sir Henry Betterton)

Out of over a thousand vacancies circulated in this way during the last three months, only two were for aliens. In one case the employer had applied for a permit to bring in an alien from abroad and in the other for an extension of an existing permit; the circulation of the vacancies was part of an effort to find someone with the necessary qualifications from among persons already resident in this country. The answer to the second part of the question is in the affirmative.
