HC Deb 07 February 1933 vol 274 c34
41. Mr. HICKS

asked the Prime Minister the number of schemes that have been put into force by the Government during the last three months in respect to the provision of work for the unemployed?

The MINISTER of LABOUR (Sir Henry Betterton)

As has already been stated, the Government decided some time ago to discontinue the ineffective policy of attempting to relieve unemployment by a system of State subsidies in aid of public works, and no State-aided schemes for the relief of unemployment have been begun in the last three months.
