HC Deb 18 December 1933 vol 284 cc916-7
54. Mr. DUNCAN

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education if he will state the conclusion reached as a result of an inquiry into the nutrition of school children made by the London County Council recently?

Mr. RAMSBOTHAM

My Noble Friend understands that 1,281 children in the 10 year old age group were examined, the schools selected being mainly in poor areas. Of these children 93.5 per cent. were found to be well nourished and 6.5 per cent. poorly nourished. Only two children were grossly ill-nourished. The poorly-nourished children were not found to be principally the children of the poorest parents; in fact, the percentage of poorly-nourished children of parents in full-time employment was found to be higher than the average for the whole group. In view of the prolonged economic depression, the result of the inquiry is regarded by the London County Council as very reassuring.
