§ 10. Captain FULLERasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he has any information as to the sums obtained during the last two years for military purposes in Japan by public donations and subscriptions?
§ Mr. EDENAccording to reports appearing in the Japanese Press in 1932, 896 the Municipality of Osaka presented to the Japanese War Office in the summer of that year anti-aircraft equipment purchased by voluntary subscription to the value of approximately one million yen. This equipment was apparently to be used for local air defence. Similar reports earlier in that year indicated that there was also a general movement for raising funds for the air defence of Tokyo and its vicinity. I have, however, no information as to the amount which may have been raised. No reports as to the raising of money for military purposes by public subscription have reached me during 1933.
