HC Deb 11 December 1933 vol 284 c7
23. Captain WATERHOUSE

asked the Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department what import duties or other taxes are charged on horned stock imported into the Argentine Republic from this country?

Lieut.-Colonel COLVILLE

Live pedigree animals for breeding purposes are admitted free of duty into Argentina, under a Decree of 7th May, 1931, which was confirmed by a Law of 24th June, 1932. The duty-free admission of pedigree animals was conventionalised under the recent trade agreement. Customs clearance charges, at the rate of 1.8 per cent. ad valorem, are charged on the following official valuations:

Gold Pesos each.
Bulls 1,000
Cows 300

Animals, other than pedigree animals for breeding purposes, are subject to a duty of 22 per cent. ad valorem and also to a temporary additional duty of 10 per cent. ad valorem, and to Customs clearance charges of 1.8 per cent. ad valorem, calculated on the official valuation of 50 gold pesos each.

Captain WATERHOUSE

In view of the fact that taxes and dues are payable on the importation of those pedigree beasts, will the hon. and gallant Gentleman make representations, and, if those representations fail to give a reciprocal agreement, will he start a little reciprocity by taxing their imports into this country?

Lieut.-Colonel COLVILLE

I will take into consideration what my hon. and gallant Friend says, but I can give no undertaking.
