HC Deb 04 December 1933 vol 283 c1292
26. Mr. WELLWOOD JOHNSTON

asked the First Commissioner of Works whether he will take steps to prevent or to diminish the smell of cooking in the corridors and precincts of the House of Commons building?

The FIRST COMMISSIONER of WORKS (Br. Ormsby-Gore)

In a building of the character and age of the Houses of Parliament it is, I fear, impossible to prevent the smell of cooking penetrating beyond the kitchens, dining rooms and mess rooms, of which there are at least 17 situated in different parts of the building. I am however hoping to modernise to some extent the kitchen of this House during the coming financial year, which will, I trust, tend to reduce the nuisance complained of by my hon. Friend.
