HC Deb 26 April 1933 vol 277 cc96-7
3. Mr. MANDER

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if, as a result of the incursions by Nazis into Saar territory, any appeal has been made by the Saar Governing Commission to the League of Nations?

Sir J. SIMON

No information has reached me regarding any such incursions or any such appeal by the Saar Governing Commission.

4. Mr. MANDER

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what reports he has recently received concerning the persecution of Jews in Germany?

Sir J. SIMON

I receive frequent reports from His Majesty's representatives abroad regarding the internal situation in the countries in which they are stationed, but, as stated in reply to the hon. Member for Broxtowe (Mr. Cocks) on the 12th April, it is not as a general rule desirable, nor is it the practice, to disclose the nature of such reports from our Ambassadors.

Mr. JANNER

Will my right hon. Friend let the House know whether the official Government in Germany has denied in any of the reports that it is carrying on a system of discrimination against the Jewish people in Germany with a view eventually to driving them out of all forms of livelihood in that country?

Mr. HOLFORD KNIGHT

Has my right hon. Friend taken the opportunity of conveying to the German Ambassador the deep concern felt in this country about these discriminations against Jews and other political persons in the German jurisdiction?

Mr. SPEAKER

That is going a good deal beyond the question on the Paper.

Mr. JANNER

Could my question be answered by the right hon. Gentleman, as it is a matter of very deep concern?

Mr. THORNE

Is the right hon. Gentleman satisfied, from the information that he has already received, that there is a good deal of persecution going on in connection with the Jewish community and others in Germany?

Sir J. SIMON

If I might reply comprehensively, it will be manifest, I think, to the House that these are very delicate matters to deal with by way of question and answer. I would venture to repeat what I said in the Debate before Easter, that the general feeling of the country had, I was convinced, been expressed in the speeches which were then delivered.

Mr. McENTEE

Has the right hon. Gentleman any information of any Jewish British nationals in Germany who have had any discrimination exercised against them?

Sir J. SIMON

Subject to correction, the answer is "No."
