HC Deb 13 April 1933 vol 276 c2720
10. Mr. MANDER

asked the Minister of Health whether contractors building houses for local authorities towards which there has been a Government grant are required to observe the fair wages clause of the House of Commons with regard to all materials used; and whether he is satisfied that this is being carried out in all cases?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of HEALTH (Mr. Shakespeare)

It is a condition of the grant of subsidy for the erection of houses that the contracts shall contain a fair wages clause complying with the requirements of any resolution of the House of Commons in force with respect to contracts of Government Departments, and my right hon. Friend has no reason to suppose that this condition is not observed. The resolution does not deal with wages other than those paid by a contractor or subcontractor.

Mr. MANDER

If I bring to the attention of my hon. Friend cases where it has not been done, will he be good enough to have them investigated?

Mr. SHAKESPEARE

Certainly.
