HC Deb 27 October 1932 vol 269 c1154
66. Mr. DAVID MASON

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of the sudden fall in the value of the pound and fluctuations in the exchange, he proposes to take any steps to restore the value of the pound so that the notes will he equal in value to the gold which they represent?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I would refer the hon. Member to the statement which I made at Ottawa, which was as follows: We do not see any prospect of a speedy return to the gold standard, nor are we prepared to say at the present time at what parity such a return should be effected if and when it takes place. I see no reason for reconsidering this statement.

Mr. MASON

I beg to give notice that I shall raise this question on the Adjournment at a date convenient to the right hon. Gentleman.
