82. Sir JOHN WARDLAW-MILNE

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what countries outside the Empire have made proposals for reciprocal trading arrangements with the object of lowering tariff barriers, and which have suggested negotiations intended to lead to this result?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Mr. Eden)

A large number of countries have expressed their desire to enter into tariff negotiations with Great Britain since the beginning of the present year. His Majesty's Government in each case explained that, until the Ottawa Conference had taken place, they were not in a position to enter into negotiations. The list of these countries included Argentina, Belgium, Colombia, Cost Rica, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Poland, Santo Domingo, Sweden, Switzerland, and Uruguay. Since the Ottawa Conference, His Majesty's Government have indicated readiness to enter into negotiations with the following countries: Argentina, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden.

Captain MACDONALD

Will the hon. Gentleman take steps to forward a copy of this reply to the right hon. Member for Darwen (Sir H. Samuel)?

Mr. McGOVERN

Will the Under-Secretary consider issuing a handbook of rules on tariffs for foreign countries?
