HC Deb 25 October 1932 vol 269 cc789-90
11. Mr. CONANT

asked the President of the Board of Trade the number of new factories set up in this country since the introduction of tariffs and the estimated number of workers employed therein?

13. Mr. PARKINSON

asked the President of the Board of Trade how many new works have been started in Lancashire from 1st October, 1931, to 1st October, 1932, stating the number of people who are employed in such works?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

Since the reply given on the 4th July last to the hon. Member for Colchester (Mr. Lewis) the Board of Trade have received information of some 50 additional new undertakings which have been established by or with the assistance of foreign concerns and which have commenced production. I hope to be in a position shortly to make a statement which will show the number of undertakings set up in particular areas, including Lancashire, and the number of workers employed in these undertakings.

Mr. RHYS DAVIES

Can the right hon. Gentleman tell the House whether these factories are producing commodities that could not have been produced by our own people without the aid of tariffs?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

I cannot say without an examination of each case individually.
