HC Deb 25 October 1932 vol 269 cc794-6
51. Mr. JOEL

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what applications for revised import duties are now before the Import Duties Advisory Committee; and whether he has ascertained that the present method of making public such applications is adequate to enable the views of all concerned to be submitted to the committee in sufficient time for consideration in connection therewith

The CHANCELLOR of the EXCHEQUER (Mr. Chamberlain)

In reply to the first part of my hon. Friend's question, I will with his permission circulate in the OFFICIAL REPORT a list of the advertised applications for revised import duties which are now before the Import Duties Advisory Committee. With regard to the second part, I have no reason to doubt that the present method of making public such applications is adequate to enable the views of all concerned to be submitted to the committee in sufficient time for their adequate consideration.

Mr. MORGAN JONES

Has any single application been rejected by this Committee?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

If the hon. Member will give me notice of that question, I shall be happy to reply to it.

Following is the list

APPLICATIONS WHICH HAVE BEEN MADE TO THE IMPORT DUTIES ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR THE IMPOSITION OR MODIFICATION OF ADDITIONAL DUTIES, OR OF VARIATIONS OF THE FREE LIST, OF WHICH PUBLIC NOTICE HAS BEEN GIVEN AND WHICH ARE STILL UNDER CONSIDERATION.

For Additional Duties or Increased Rates of Duty.

For Addition, to the Free List.

For Removal from the Free List and Additional Duties.

67. Mr. CHORLTON

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is aware of the difficulty of manufacturing firms not members of a large trade body in obtaining consideration of their case by the Tariffs Advisory Committee, and what steps he proposes to take to overcome it?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

While the Import Duties Advisory Committee has indicated a desire that so far as possible cases shall be submitted by associations or groups representative of the trades concerned, I understand that there is no obstacle to representations being made by individual concerns in appropriate cases, and that such representations are fully considered. In regard to the second part of the question, the procedure of the Committee is a matter for determination solely by the Committee itself.
