HC Deb 24 October 1932 vol 269 c599
54. Lieut.-Colonel MOORE

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he has considered the abolition of bag-nets and drag-nets in the salmon fishing industry of Scotland, with the object of enabling more fish to reach the spawning grounds and building up the industry on a large scale?

The SECRETARY of STATE for SCOTLAND (Sir Godfrey Collins)

The abolition of bag-nets and drag-nets would create serious difficulties and is not practicable; but the question of further regulation both of net and rod fishing will be kept in view in connection with proposals for legislation to amend the Salmon Fishery Acts.

Lieut.-Colonel MOORE

Would the Minister not consider restricting the catching to drift nets, as that would give the fish a sporting chance?

Sir G. COLLINS

The hon. and gallant Member must know that difficulties in connection with compensation of owners of nets would arise.
