HC Deb 10 November 1932 vol 270 cc477-8
5. Captain NORTH

asked the Minister of Labour whether, in drawing up any future legislation in connection with unemployment insurance, he will consider the advisability of providing that no alien worker in Great Britain shall contribute to or be eligible for benefits under the scheme?

Sir H. BETTERTON

I will note my hon. and gallant Friend's suggestion.

Captain NORTH

May I ask why it is necessary to allow aliens to be admitted?

Sir H. BETTERTON

As the hon. and gallant Member knows, there is a strict inquiry made before aliens are admitted. Many of those who are of alien origin have been here for a great many years and many of them are naturalised British subjects.

Mr. HANNON

Can the right hon. Gentleman give any figures of the numbers of aliens who are now receiving unemployment benefit or transitional benefit?

Sir H. BETTERTON

No, Sir, nor do I think I could get them, but I will look into the matter.
