Sir PERCY HURDasked the Minister of Health if he is aware that in the scheme of the Wiltshire county council for the re-arrangement of county districts and parishes, names full of English history such as Clarendon, Bohun, Bruce, Fitzwarren, and Bermerton are to be effaced from legal and official documents; and whether, when considering these proposals, he will give historians and archæologists of repute an opportunity of expressing their views and making suggestions?
Sir H. YOUNGI am aware of the proposals of the Wiltshire County Council. Representations may be made to me on any of the proposals, and will receive my most careful consideration, and a public inquiry will be held. I need not assure my hon. Friend that I am not indifferent to the value of the historical associations of place-names, but he will understand that in these matters I may well have to balance one advantage against others.
