2. Mr. WARDLAW-MILNE

5. Mr. T. WILLIAMS

asked the Secretary of State for India if he will inform the House as to the latest situation in India?

Sir S. HOARE

As regards the civil disobedience movement there has been little change in the general situation during the week. Attempts have been made in one or two provinces to rouse interest and create trouble by holding provincial conferences to confirm the resolutions which an attempt was made to pass at the recent Delhi Session. During the week there was a renewal of the communal rioting in Bombay City. My latest information is to the effect that the position is still unsatisfactory. The affected areas are being patrolled by the military, the return of the troops brought into the city has been suspended and the number of motor patrols increased.
