Country. Import Duties on United kingdom Coal, Coke and Patent Fuel. Import Restrictions. Subventions or other aid to Native Industry.
France. Coal and Coke (including briquettes) —20 cts. Per 100 kgs. The present restrictions and on coal, briquettes and certain classes of coke is by a quota of 64 per cent. of the average imports for the years 1928–30 Special reductions in Railway rates of coal hauled 250 Km. and over.
There is a turnover tax of 2½ per cent. ad valorem. Instructions to Public Utility Undertakings to give priority to French coal provided the price is not more than 10 per cent. higher than foreign coal. If it is higher, the French Mines Department must be consulted.
NOTE: — This restriction applies to all countries.
Belgium Free The present restriction on imports of coal and briquettes is 55. per cent. of the average imports during the first six months of 1931. Preferential Railway rates.
There is a sales tax of 2 per cent. ad valorem.

Germany. Turnover tax of 2 per cent. on coal or coke imported from all countries. On British coal this tax is assessed on the following valuations:— The present quota of British coal, coke and briquettes is 100,000 tons a month, to which it has fallen by successive reductions from 42,000 a month on 30th September, 1931. Preferential Railway Rates.
Coal 12 ½ Reichsmarks per ton. For the purpose of subsidizing export coal the Ruhr Coal Syndicate draws on the proceeds of a levy on all coal sold.
Coke 17.2 Reichsmarks per ton. Coal for bunkers and for the free harbour zones is not included in the quota. Temporary relief is allowed from payment of unemployment insurance contributions.
