82. Mr. HUTCHISONasked the Minister of Health the number of houses 2070 built by the London County Council, with the aid of the subsidy, which are actually at the present time completed but not tenanted on their different estates in and around London; and the reasons for such houses not being tenanted?
Sir H. YOUNGThe number of houses and flats built with the aid of subsidy by the London County Council is 48,411. Of these 295 or 0.61 per cent. are, I understand, unoccupied, consisting of properties being redecorated for incoming tenants, properties reserved for families displaced in connection with clearance schemes and new properties for which applications are under consideration.
Mr. HUTCHISONIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that the occupants of these houses are taken from the congested areas of London and that it is impossible for the children of the occupants of these houses when they get married to obtain houses on these various estates?
§ Mr. KIRKWOODIs the right hon. Gentleman not aware that in London to-day there are 20,000 people who want houses and cannot get them and that there were never more unemployed house builders in and around London than there are to-day? What action does he propose to take?
§ Mr. SPEAKERThat matter does not arise out of the question.
