HC Deb 12 May 1932 vol 265 c2077
43. Mr. LAMBERT

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what amount yearly has been paid in rates for the past 10 years to the county of Devon by the Department responsible for the Dartmoor prison; and whether the prison authorities have received amenity advantages in common with other ratepayers?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

Amounts ranging from £2,226 to £2,791 per annum in respect of rates on Dartmoor Prison have been paid during the last 10 years to the rating authority in whose area the prison is situate. The prison authorities have, no doubt, benefited in common with other ratepayers from the services rendered by the county and district authorities.

Mr. LAMBERT

Why should the County of Devon be mulcted in a large sum in costs for the recent trial of prisoners at Dartmoor prison?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

If I may say so that is an entirely different question.
