HC Deb 23 March 1932 vol 263 c1020
20. Mr. LEES-JONES

asked the Minister of Transport whether, in view of the recommendation of the Royal Commission on Transport that the future allocation of Road Fund grants should be concentrated upon the reconstruction of bridges, and in view of the unemployment in the steel trade, he is now in a position to authorise the construction of bridges which local authorities are desirous of proceeding with?

The MINISTER of TRANSPORT (Mr. Pybus)

I shall continue sympathetically to consider applications for financial assistance from the Road Fund towards the reconstruction of weak and dangerous bridges; but in the present circumstances grants must be restricted to cases presenting features of special urgency.

Mr. GUY

May I ask that the Minister of Transport will keep in mind the pressing need for a large number of new bridges in Scotland?

Mr. PYBUS

Yes, Sir.
