HC Deb 21 March 1932 vol 263 c703
75. Mr. GLOSSOP

asked the Minister of Transport when it is intended to terminate the road schemes at Thurgoland and Cawthorne, in the urban district of Penistone; and whether, in view of the circumstances prevailing at Penistone in consequence of the closing of the local steel works, he will sanction the continuation of these road schemes for a further period?

Mr. PYBUS

I have arranged with the West Riding County Council for work on the Penistone and Cawthorne by-passes to be carried out to the extent of rather more than one-half of the total estimated expenditure of £182,000. Having regard to the necessity for limiting Road Fund expenditure, I regret that I am unable at present to make a grant to a further extension of the works.

Mr. GLOSSOP

Will the hon. Gentleman, when reviewing these cases, pay regard to the areas that are particularly necessitous?

Mr. PYBUS

Yes, I invariably do.
