HC Deb 21 March 1932 vol 263 c694
45. Captain ERSKINE-BOLST

asked the Prime Minister whether he will consider the desirability of fixing a retiring age for Judges of the High Court and courts of summary jurisdiction?

The PRIME MINISTER (Mr. Ramsay MacDonald)

This question has often been considered. I think that the better course is to continue to rely on Judges of the High Court retiring before infirmity affects the efficient discharge of their duties. I also think it undesirable to fix a retiring age for justices of the peace, many of whom can usefully perform part of their duties after they have voluntarily ceased to sit in courts of summary jurisdiction.
