HC Deb 17 March 1932 vol 263 cc442-3
31. Mr. T. WILLIAMS

asked the Home Secretary whether the three assistant Under-Secretaries of State, for whom a provision of £4,331 is made in the Estimates for 1932, have yet been appointed; what will be their duties; and why it is considered necessary to appoint three assistant under-secretaries in place of one principal assistant secretary?

Sir H. SAMUEL

These appointments have been made with effect as from 1st April next. The changes mentioned in the question are only part of a re-organisation which has been effected in the Home Office and which was long overdue. It is the result of very careful inquiry, and has, of course, the concurrence of the Treasury. It will be brought into effect gradually, and there will, in fact, be no increase in expenditure in the coming financial year.
