HC Deb 10 March 1932 vol 262 cc1959-60
36. Mr. HUTCHISON

asked the Home Secretary if the Metropolitan Police, in view of the increasing number of smash-and-grab raids, will suggest to the larger retailers the desirability of employing outside watchmen as well as inside?

Sir H. SAMUEL

As I pointed out in my reply to a question by the hon. Member for West Lewisham (Sir P. Dawson) on 18th February, the number of such raids in the Metropolitan Police District in 1931 showed an appreciable decrease on 1930. The Commissioner of Police would welcome action on the part of retailers for the better protection of their property, and has called attention to the matter in his annual reports, but he does not think it is within his province to make specific proposals in particular cases.
