HC Deb 07 March 1932 vol 262 cc1467-8
35. Mr. LEWIS

asked the Postmaster-General whether he proposes to take any steps, either by way of increasing the charge for Press telegrams or otherwise, to make the telegraph system of this country self-supporting?

The POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Sir Kingsley Wood)

Every effort is being made, by means of improved equipment and methods, to secure the maximum of economy in the working of the telegraph system, and thus to keep the deficit as Tow as possible. I do not, however, consider the present an opportune time for legislation to increase charges, whether for ordinary telegrams or for Press telegrams.
