HC Deb 07 March 1932 vol 262 cc1460-1
16 and 17. Sir A. M. SAMUEL

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (1), if he will request His Majesty's Minister in Berlin to ascertain why the German Government has permitted the detention by the Dresdner Bank, Berlin, of a remittance by the City of Budapest in transit to England for the service of the City of Budapest's obligations to British subjects; and will he also make representations to the German Govern- ment with a view to the release of the funds for transmission to the British authorities;

(2) whether he will request the Hungarian national and municipal authorities, when remitting sterling to London for the service of their obligations in Britain, to hand those funds to His Majesty's commercial secretary at Budapest for transmission to London in order that they may not be detained by other persons en route?

Mr. EDEN

I have no precise information as to the facts referred to by my hon. Friend, but inquiries are now being made regarding the circumstances in which these funds were detained, and on receipt of this information the question of what action can be taken to protect British interests in the matter will be considered.

Sir A. M. SAMUEL

Will my hon. Friend in the meantime notify the German Government that His Majesty's Government do not propose to acquiesce in the detention of the property of British subjects which is in transit?

Mr. EDEN

I think that we had better be sure of the facts before we make any representation.
