HC Deb 03 March 1932 vol 262 cc1273-4
69. Major CARVER

asked the Minister of Agriculture if he can make any statement as to the position of the dispute between the producers and distributors of milk in England and Wales?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I presume that my hon. and gallant Friend refers to the question of varying for the month of March the contract price of milk. I understand that this matter was considered at a recent meeting of the permanent joint committee representing both the producers and distributors of milk, and that the result of the meeting was that no variation is to be made.

65. Brigadier-General CLIFTON BROWN

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether, seeing that the distributors have refused the producers' request to continue the present milk prices for March, he is taking any steps to see that the lowered price is passed on to the consumer; and whether he is aware there is likely to be another shortage of milk in consequence of the price being lowered to Is. per gallon, including carriage?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I have no power to intervene for the purpose stated in the first part of the question; but I have no reason to doubt that consumers generally will benefit to the extent of the reduction in the wholesale price of milk, and I am informed that this has already occurred in London. I am advised that, a shortage in the supply of milk at this period of the year is unlikely.

Brigadier-General BROWN

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that it is quite impossible to pay wages and carry out these instructions, and pay a carriage of is. per gallon, and that, therefore, there is certain to be a shortage of milk in the country?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I look forward to a review of the whole milk production of this oountry.
