HC Deb 02 March 1932 vol 262 cc1095-6
39. Colonel CROOKSHANK

asked the Prime Minister if he is prepared to consider legislation to enable the rail services to obtain a fair share of the State grants and aid which at present place the road services in a favoured position in regard to traffic costs?

The LORD PRESIDENT of the COUNCIL (Mr. Baldwin)

No, Sir. My hon. and gallant Friend will appreciate that all the questions affecting railways and road transport raise large issues not capable of treatment within the limits of a Parliamentary answer.

Colonel CROOKSHANK

Will my right hon. Friend not avail himself of the opportunity of obtaining additional revenue and easing the situation by increasing the taxation on road transport for the use of tracks on the construction of which it has incurred no capital expenditure and for the maintenance of which it contributes to a small extent only?

Mr. BALDWIN

I will convey the suggestion of my hon. and gallant Friend to the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
