18 and 19. Captain CAZALETasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (1) whether he has yet received any further information with regard to the raid from Abyssinia into Sudanese territory; and whether the captured women and children have yet been recovered;
(2) whether, seeing that the representatives of the British and Abyssinian Governments were to meet at Gambeila in the early part of this month, he has received any report upon the arrangements to be made for the prevention of further raids into British administered territory.
§ Sir J. SIMONThe Governor of the Upper Nile Province has now reported that the Gambeila meeting has produced satisfactory results, and His Majesty's High Commissioner at Cairo has promised to communicate details as soon as they are available. The most categorical orders for the return of the captives had previously been issued by the Abyssinian Government. We have in addition received information that four 1459 women and children and 82 head of cattle have been restored by some of the Sudanese Anuaks who joined in the raid.
Captain CAZALETCan my right hon. Friend say whether any question of compensation by the Abyssinian Government has yet arisen?
§ Sir J. SIMONI do not think that that question has yet arisen.
