HC Deb 21 June 1932 vol 267 cc903-4
26. Sir BERTRAM FALLE

asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office the number of Army officers retired who are now employed at the War Office and are in receipt of pay plus pension; and what the annual cost to the country is?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the WAR OFFICE (Mr. Duff Cooper)

The number of Army retired officers employed in the War Office in receipt of Army retired pay is 32. The amount of their retired pay is approximately £7,000.

Sir B. FALLE

Will the hon. Member restrict as much as possible the employment of these retired officers as the cost is unnecessary?

Mr. COOPER

The cost is no higher than it would be if the work were done by anyone else. Somebody has to do the work that they are doing, and if they are qualified to do it, I do not see why they should not be employed as well as anyone else.
