§ 28. Mr. DAVID ADAMSasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will consider the appointment of a special inspectorate to ensure that labour decrees are properly carried out 522 in Palestine, and to publish an annual report on these matters?
§ Sir R. HAMILTONI have no reason to suppose that the existing arrangements for giving effect to the provisions of labour legislation are inadequate. If, however, the hon. Member can furnish me with any evidence to the contrary, I will ask the High Commissioner whether the matter could be considered by the local committee which is at present examining the operation of labour legislation in Palestine.
§ 29. Mr. ADAMSasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the amount contributed by the Government of Palestine in the last convenient year towards the upkeep of Jewish and of Arab schools, respectively; what proportion of the Jewish contribution to taxation is expended on Jewish education; and what proportion of the Arab contributions to taxation is spent on Arab education?
§ Sir R. HAMILTONThe figures for the year 1931 are as follow:
£ Jewish Schools: Grant to Jewish Agency 19,190 Per capita grant to Jewish Schools 1,289 Total £20,479 The question of the amount of the Jewish contribution to revenue is at present under discussion between the Government of Palestine and the Jewish Agency Executive, and until I have learnt what conclusion has been reached on this point I am unable to reply to the latter part of the question.
£ Arab Schools: Government Schools 104,907 Grants to Moslem Schools 624 Total £105,531
