HC Deb 16 June 1932 vol 267 cc525-6
18. Mr. GROVES

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury if any recent changes have been made respecting the payment of old age pensions to persons in rate-aided institutions for surgical or medical treatment; and whether he will state the conditions now existent for persons in receipt of such pensions who are sent to such institutions?

Major ELLIOT

I am not aware of any recent change regarding the payment of Old Age Pensions to persons who are in Poor Law Institutions for medical or surgical treatment. The payment of pensions under the Old Age Pensions Acts 1908–24, is subject to the conditions in the Jaw and regulations relating to those pensions, and the Widows', Orphans' and Old Age Contributory Pensions Act, 1929, provides that the disqualification for pension attaching to a person who is an inmate of a poor law institution shall not apply to a person who entered the institution for the purpose of obtaining medical or surgical treatment so long as he requires such treatment.

Mr. GROVES

Is it still the case that pensioners can enter rate-aided institutions for surgical or medical treatment and retain their pension rights?

Major ELLIOT

There has been no change in that respect.
