HC Deb 16 June 1932 vol 267 c507
1. Major LEIGHTON

asked the Minister of Labour how many temporary clerks are now employed in the Employment Exchanges throughout the country, and how many of these are ex-service men?

The MINISTER of LABOUR (Sir Henry Betterton)

There were 8,800 temporary male clerks and 2,113 temporary women clerks employed in Employment Exchanges on the 23rd May, 1932, the latest date for which figures are readily available. Of these clerks 8,272 are ex-service men.

Major LEIGHTON

Do I understand that a preference is given to ex-service men for these posts?

Sir H. BETTERTON

Yes, certainly. The instructions are that ex-service men must be engaged if suitable candidates are available.

Major LEIGHTON

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether it is a fact that 30 clerks at the Employment Exchange at Glasgow are not ex-service men?

Sir H. BETTERTON

I could not say without notice, but I will look into the matter, and let my hon. and gallant Friend know.
