HC Deb 15 June 1932 vol 267 c383
18. Mr. CHORLTON

asked the Minister of Transport if he will state the reasons why a roundabout traffic arrangement has been provided at the Westminster side of the new Lambeth Bridge, whereas no such arrangement has been deemed necessary at the south end of the same bridge?

The MINISTER of TRANSPORT (Mr. Pybus)

The "roundabout" type of layout was adopted for the Westminster end of Lambeth Bridge because the approach roads are well adapted for the purpose and it was considered the most suitable system of control for the heavy volume of traffic to be dealt with at that point. The provision of a "roundabout" at the eastern approach to the bridge was regarded as impracticable mainly owing to the nature of the gradients and the existence of tramways. Consideration is, however, being given to the advisability of installing traffic control signals at this junction.
