HC Deb 15 June 1932 vol 267 cc377-8
1. Sir ARTHUR MICHAEL SAMUEL

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will ascertain from the Argentine Government their attitude towards British capital now invested in railways and other public services operating in Argentina?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Mr. Eden)

My right hon. Friend does not consider that a general inquiry such as proposed would, in existing conditions, serve any useful purpose, but my right hon. Friend will always be ready to consider any specific circumstances which may be brought to his notice.

Sir A. M. SAMUEL

Is the hon. Gentleman aware of the treatment which has been applied to the Anglo-Argentine Tramway Company, which is run by British capital?

Mr. EDEN

That is a specific question which I have dealt with before. If the hon. Gentleman wants further particulars, I will give them. We are doing all that we can.

Mr. MAXTON

Is the hon. Gentleman not taking steps to send out a battleship to Chile in connection with a similar problem?

Mr. SPEAKER

This question relates to the Argentine.
