HC Deb 14 June 1932 vol 267 cc169-70
12. Mr. LEWIS

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will consider giving the necessary notice for the denunciation of our existing commercial treaties with foreign countries so that we may not be hampered by the most-favoured-nation clause in the negotiation of any new agreements with regard to tariffs or quotas with individual countries?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply given on 26th May to a similar question by the hon. and gallant Member for North East Bethnal Green (Major Nathan), of which I am sending him a copy.

Mr. LEWIS

Does the hon. Gentleman realise that this will mean great delay when it is sought to introduce fresh treaties if nothing is done in the meantime?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

It has frequently been announced in the House that our policy with regard to the treaty position will be made dependent upon Ottawa.
