HC Deb 13 June 1932 vol 267 cc26-7
56. Mr. COCKS

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will give an assurance that His Majesty's Government will not propose for discussion at or in connection with the Lausanne Conference the question of the return of this country to the Gold Standard?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

For the reasons explained in the Debate on the Report stage of the Finance Bill on Thursday last, I think that it would be most undesirable for me to make any dogmatic statement in regard to our monetary policy at the present moment. I should add, however, that, as the House is already aware, His Majesty's Government consider that it would not be desirable for this country to return to the Gold Standard, so long as existing conditions continue.
