ADAMSasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether arrangements have now been made to ensure fair wages and fair conditions of labour on the work carried out under the Convention regulating the Transit of Mineral Oils of Iraq Petroleum Company, Limited, through the territory of Palestine; and, if so, whether wages and conditions on it will be similar to those in force on the Haifa harbour construction?
§ Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTERThe company have given His Majesty's Government a formal assurance that they will observe fair conditions of labour in the execution of all works carried out under the Convention. I am not yet in posses- 1917 sion of information as to these conditions of labour but I know that the matter is engaging the attention of the High Commissioner with reference to the assurance given by the company.
