HC Deb 12 July 1932 vol 268 c1099
20. Mr. N. MACLEAN (for Mr. DUNCAN GRAHAM)

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the total authorised strength of the police forces in Scotland as at 31st December in each of the last five years?

Sir A. SINCLAIR

The figures are as follow:

1927 6,605
1928 6,607
1929 6,613
1930 6,621
1931 6,626
It will be observed that there has been a small increase in each of these past years, and I am glad to have this opportunity of making it clear that, when I informed the hon. Member, in the course of Debate on the Police (Scotland) Vote, that the numbers of the police were decreasing, I was thinking of the present year and next year, when, as a result of measures of consolidation and reorganisation either adopted or to be adopted, there should, unless unforeseen circumstances arise, be a substantial decrease.
