HC Deb 12 July 1932 vol 268 cc1089-90
3. Colonel Sir VANSITTART BOWATER

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he is aware that 87 tons of Cheshire cheese were sold at the Nantwich fair at 7¾d. per pound and that the price charged retail is 1s. 8d. per pound; and what action does he purpose taking in the matter, through the Food Council or otherwise?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

My attention has been drawn to correspondence on this subject published in the Press. I am making inquiries into the matter, and shall be glad to let my hon. and gallant Friend know the result.

Sir V. BOWATER

Does not the hon. Gentleman consider that this is gross profiteering; is it not subject to a penalty of £500 and/or three months; and is it proposed to institute prosecutions?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

I have told my hon. and gallant Friend that we are instituting inquiries, and it will depend, of course, upon the results of those inquiries what action is taken.

Mr. T. WILLIAMS

Will all Members of the House be able to have a copy of the result?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

If the hon. Member will ask me that question when the inquiry is over, I shall be able to answer it.
