HC Deb 11 July 1932 vol 268 c869
1. Sir JOHN WARDLAW - MILNE

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he will give the House the latest information he has as to the present political situation in India?

2. Mr. T. WILLIAMS

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he can make a statement as to the present political situation in India?

The SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Sir Samuel Hoare)

Except for one incident in the Midnapore District in Bengal, where the police were compelled to open fire to disperse a mob, there is nothing of importance to record during the past week. Continued attempts to hold Congress Conferences have met with little or no success. The improvement in the situation in Bombay City is maintained, but the total number of casualties sustained in the riots up to the 8th July now amounts to 213 killed and 2,682 injured.

Mr. MORGAN JONES

When the right hon. Gentleman says that attempts to hold Congress Conferences have met with no success, does that imply that the Government have taken steps to prevent the meetings of what is still a legal organisation?

Sir S. HOARE

No, Sir. There has been no change in the administration.
