HC Deb 11 July 1932 vol 268 cc894-5
61. Mr. LAWSON

asked the Secretary for Mines whether he has now received the report on the accident in a shaft in Felton Fell, Durham, whereby three men lost their lives on 28th June; and whether he has decided to hold an official inquiry?

The SECRETARY for MINES (Mr. Isaac Foot)

I have received a full report on this accident from the Divisional Inspector of Mines and a full report of the inquest proceedings. The facts, I believe, have now been fully ascertained, and I do not think a further public inquiry would produce any further information. I am considering carefully what further action it may be my duty to take on the reports before me.

Mr. LAWSON

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that three men lost their lives in this accident, and that at the inquest it was stated that the regular shaft was not being used, but another, for the sake of economy? Also, that there is very grave misgivings in the district, especially as there has been another shaft accident?

Mr. FOOT

I can understand the misgiving that exists, but I do not think a public inquiry would elicit any further facts. I have now to decide what action we must take upon the facts which have been revealed to us. I have only received the report over the week-end.

Mr. LAWSON

Will the hon. Gentleman give this matter very serious consideration, in order that a repetition of these circumstances may be prevented?

Mr. FOOT

That promise I am very happy to give to my hon. Friend.

Mr. G. NICHOLSON

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that there are many rumours going about in the neighbourhood which a public inquiry would help to set at rest?

Mr. FOOT

I do not think a public inquiry would help, but undoubtedly the particulars available have revealed a certain course of action which I may have to take, and I shall state that course as soon as possible.
