HC Deb 11 July 1932 vol 268 c900
70. Mr. GEORGE HARVEY

asked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been drawn to the large number of irregularities in the conduct of clubs all over the country disclosed in recent court proceedings; and whether he proposes to take any action in the matter?

Mr. STANLEY

I presume the hon. Member refers to irregularities in connection with the supply of intoxicants in clubs. My right hon. Friend is aware that proceedings have to be taken in a number of cases; but he does not think that there is any action which he could usefully take in the matter at present. As the hon. Member will be aware, the whole question has been the subject of exhaustive inquiry by the Royal Commission on Licensing, who have made various proposals involving legislation, but the Government is not yet in a position to announce any decision.

Mr. T. WILLIAMS

Does the hon. Gentleman agree that there are a large number of irregularities in clubs in the provinces?

Mr. STANLEY

My answer was that proceedings have been taken in a number of cases.
