HC Deb 06 July 1932 vol 268 c422
17. Mr. RHYS DAVIES

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether the mui-tsai system is now totally abolished in Hong Kong; and, if not, what action is being taken to ensure the suppression of this practice of child slavery

The SECRETARY of STATE for the COLONIES (Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister)

The system has been abolished. The girls who were mui-tsai have been registered, and their status changed to that of free paid domestic workers. Three inspectors—a European police officer and two Chinese ladies—have been appointed by Government to ensure that the regulations are observed.
