HC Deb 05 July 1932 vol 268 cc224-5
24. Mr. BUCHANAN

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is in a position to make any statement as to his negotiations with the county council of Angus regarding test work at Montrose?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for SCOTLAND (Mr. Skelton)

I am informed that this matter was considered by the public assistance committee of the county council of Angus at a meeting held yesterday, when the committee instructed the county clerk to report to the Department of Health for Scotland that there is no test work in Montrose and that no one is required to work as a condition of getting relief.

Mr. BUCHANAN

If any case happens in the future where work is made a condition of relief, will the hon. Gentleman take steps in the matter?

Mr. SKELTON

It is, of course, quite illegal in Scotland to make work a condition of relief, but I am bound to say that inquiries have not shown that any case of that sort has occurred at Montrose.
