HC Deb 18 February 1932 vol 261 c1828
95. Mr. HAMMERSLEY

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what instructions British representatives at the League of Nations have been given in reference to the Ukrainian petitions to the League, alleging oppression of the Ukrainian minority in Poland?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Mr. Eden)

As I stated in my reply to the right hon. Gentleman, the Member for Newcastle-under-Lyme (Colonel Wedgwood) on the 16th of September last, the British Delegate at Geneva has throughout been fully acquainted with the views of His Majesty's Government on the questions raised in these petitions, though no formal written instructions were given to him. As my hon. Friend will have seen in the Press, Lord Cecil made that attitude plain at the recent session of bile Council where, in commenting upon the report then submitted, he expressed the hope that the question of compensation to sufferers might be reconsidered, and drew attention to recent statements regarding the treatment of Ukrainian prisoners.
