asked the Secretary for Mines how many persons were employed at the coal mines of Great Britain on 1st January, 1926; the average output per man-shift; and similar figures for 1st January, 1932?

The number of wage-earners on colliery books on 1st January, 1926, was 1,084,400, and on 1st January, 1932, 835,700. The output per man-shift worked was 18⅓ cwts. during the December quarter, 1925, and 21¾ cwts. during the December quarter, 1931.
