HC Deb 16 February 1932 vol 261 c1453
38. Mr. HOLDSWORTH

asked the President of the Board of Trade what are the latest estimates in the possession of his Department of the aggregate amount of British capital invested overseas, and of the distribution of those investments as between British and Foreign countries?

Mr. RUNCIMAN: I

would refer my hon. Friend to the article by Sir Robert Kindersley, published in the "Economic Journal" for September, 1931, and to the article dealing with the balance of trade which will appear in the "Board of Trade Journal" on 18th February. The total nominal amount of British capital invested abroad was estimated by Sir Robert Kindersley at about £3,738 million in 1929. Separate estimates have not been published showing investments in British and in foreign countries, but some information on this subject was published in the "Economist" on 25th October, 1930.
